Colonial Mentality:
HISTORY

The Philippine Colonization began during the 1500's. Our first colonizers were the Spaniards who sparked the changes in our culture and traditions within the course of their colonization. After 333 years of reign, the Spaniards surrendered their control over the Philippines to the Americans after an immense naval battle. With the Americans taking over, the Filipinos continued their struggle for independence. The Philippine-American war ended in 1902, in favor of the Americans. 10 hours after the assault on Pearl Harbor, the Japanese invasion transpired. Once again, the Filipinos struggled to quench their thirst for independence but the Japanese forces were undeniably strong. The Japanese finally conceded in 1945.

Up to this day, the influences of the Spanish, American, and Japanese invasions remain deeply rooted within our culture. The colonization of the Philippines paved way for the birth of colonial mentality. The Philippine colonizers influenced the Filipino's perception towards their own land, its products and their culture in general.
