What is Colonial Mentality?

Colonial mentality is the internalized attitude of ethnic or cultural inferiority felt by a people as a result of colonization, i.e. them being colonized by another group. It corresponds with the belief that the cultural values of the colonizer are inherently superior to one's own.
Colonial mentality is the thinking that foreign talents and products are always the good, the better, and the best, and that the local ones are of poor or no quality at all. Colonial because our Spanish and American colonizers, during their four-century rule of the Philippines, instilled into the Filipino mentality the belief that foreigners and anything associated with them were the superior, and that Filipinos and anything associated with them were worthless.

Filipinos are afflicted with colonial mentality which is one of the long-term effects brought by the colonial era. It is basically the mindset that foreign talents, practices, products, skills and many more aspects better than of one’s own. As seen now in the status quo of our streets or in our mass media, most of the things being sold are from foreign countries or foreign celebrities are often projected to advertise our local products. Slowly, this sanity replaces our sense of nationalism; our identity as Filipinos.
